The gardens were designed by "Capability" Brown who planned to include a 13 acre lake, eventually completed by Humphrey Repton nearly 40 years later.
Brown also built a Gothic Bath House, laid out an avenue of trees and provided several specimen trees including an Oriental Plane with a circumference of over 240 yards (220 metres).
Corsham Court, Main Gate
A Royal Manor in the days of Saxon Kings is currently the home of the Methuen family. It is based on an Elizabethan house dating from 1582.
Bought by Paul Methuen in the mid-18th century to house a collection of 16th & 17th century Italian and Flemish Master paintings.
During the middle of the 19th century the House was altered to receive a second collection of fashionable Italian Masters, rare Italian Primitives and stone inlaid furniture.
The house and park today are principally the work of Lancelot "Capability" Brown, John Nash and Thomas Bellamy. Brown set the style by retaining the Elizabethan stables, the Riding School and the great gabled front to the House.
This latter aspect he doubled into the gabled wings at either end of the House, creating within the east wing, the magnificent picture gallery and state rooms.
